CIS 1055 Resources
The following are links and files which will help you during the semester. Please report any broken links to cbiehl@temple.edu.
Office 2007 Purchase
Because you are responsible for all Office 2007 homework requirements, it is suggested you work strictly in Office 2007 by utilizing the computer labs at Temple University or by taking advantage of Microsoft's student discount rate of $59.95
Note: Office 2007 is Windows software (XP and Vista) and will not work with a Mac unless you have the dual boot feature with your Mac.
Office 2007 Files
1. Save as PDF/XPS add-in for Office 2007 (934 KB) - This download allows you to export and save to the PDF and XPS formats in eight Microsoft Office 2007 programs. It also allows you to send as e-mail attachment in the PDF and XPS formats in a subset of these programs. Specific features vary by program.
You can read more by visiting the web page created by Microsoft discussing the features of the file.
2. Compatibility Pack: File Format Converter (27.5 MB) - Installing this file will allow you to open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 files if you are still using Office 2003. You will usually lose formatting and effects special to Office 2007 when you open the file in Office 2003, but this will at least let you open the file.
If you are going to install the compatibility pack file on your home computer, it is important you visit this Microsoft page to read and follow all of the instructions.
Browser Upgrades - If you are still using Netscape or Internet Explorer at home, you should upgrade to one of the following browsers as soon as possible.
1. Mozilla Firefox - Firefox is an extremely capable browser with above average security. It is considered the best browser today by many of the "experts". For fun, you can use different themes to change the look of your browser and add extensions to increase the usefulness of the browser. Try it out!
2. Opera - Another option to Internet Explorer if Firefox is not right for you.
Dreamweaver CS4 30 Day Trial Version
Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 - Visit Adobe's website to download the 30 day trial version of the software. Although we use CS3 in lab, Adobe no longer offers CS3 as a trial version. You will be able to do everything you need to do for lab using CS4 at home. Wait until you cover Dreamweaver in lab before you actually install the software on your home computer. That way, you will be able to use the full 30 days to build your website at home. When you go to the Adobe site, you will be required to sign up for a free Adobe account.
