New born foal and mother. Onagers are an endangered species who are only found in this area.

Half an hour north of the town of Dhrangadhra is the Rann Wildlife Sanctuary. A study of the wildlife history of the area would include talking with village elders and other people about the state of wildlife in the past. Photographing the interactions of wildlife with domestic stock, as well as farming and salt making activity within the sanctuary, will enable students to appreciate local attitudes about animal life. Why some animals are sacred or valued and why others are considered impure is an area of inquiry students can engage in by using their photographs to elicit responses from the village community.  The second broad aspect will be to study various aspects of the pastoral community and how they interact with the wildlife. The key point here being that both the wildlife and the livestock (all species) use the same general area in the desert fringe grasslands. Finally, the study of animals is directly associated with Hindu religious iconography and art.

Male Nilgai bulls fighting. Nilgai's are antelopes but because their name in Hindi means 'Blue cow" many villagers consider them sacred and give them protection.

Sarus cranes are symbols of conjugal fidelity as they are understood to mate for life.
