COMMUNITY & DISCIPLINARY SERVICE

I have been and hope to continue to be an active member of the intellectual and local communities where I live and work.  This has included volunteer work with local housing organizations, public schools, mental health centers and museums, and activism with groups working for disability access and equity.

I have also worked to promote the health and growth of Geography as an academic discipline. As a graduate student, I worked to promote the inclusion of disability issues and social theoretic perspectives amongst medical and historical geographers by publishing critical commentaries in professional journals, by organizing numerous sessions at US and British conferences, and by creating both GEOGABLE, the international discussion list for geographers concerned with disability issues, and HISTORY-OF-GEOG, the international discussion list for the history of geography and geographical thought.  From 2000 - 2001, I served as chair of the Disability Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers.  By Spring of 2004, I have been a director for the AAG History of Geography Specialty Group, and the AAG Disability Specialty Group.  Since Spring 2005, I have served as co-chair along with Cynthia Pope for the AAG Medical Geography Specialty Group.

As a Dean's Assistant Professor in the College of Education at Temple University, one of my responsibilities has been to develop and coordinate the new Graduate Certificate in Disability Studies.  I am also an active member of the new NGO Edu-Tourism, sponsoring intellectual exchanges and sustainable development strategies in Jamaica (focusing on rural St. Thomas).  If you are in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and with to be involved in planning and fundraising for the next Summer Session I trip, please visit and join our  Edu-Tourism Meetup Site.
