| Business Meeting of the Disability Specialty Group
- March 16, 2004 7pm-8pm Attended by: Vera Chouinard, Nicole Yantzi, Rob Wilton, Rob Kitchin, Michael Dorn, Deb Metzel, Phillipe Amstislavski, Samantha Earnest and Hélène Ouillette-Kuntz. 1. Accommodations: AAG President Douglas Richardson, when asked to consider accommodations for geographers who had been unable to travel to the meeting or attend the sessions, has offered to make the texts of the plenary addresses available once they are submitted by the speakers. The intention of the AAG office is to eventually publish these papers in a collection. Mike Dorn also discussed the issues concerning the AAG’s use of CART (Computer Assisted Real Time Captioning) of sessions, particularly the plenary addresses. As long as there are only selected individuals selecting this accommodation, the AAG is would prefer to provide transcribers to assist individuals. A question of accommodation funds was raised that could be applied to the cost of scooters at AAG annual conferences. Again, this is a service that could well be attractive to many AAG participants, perhaps even drawing additional participants to our meetings, if properly advertised. Pro-active suggestions included soliciting donations from the AAG membership at the time of conference registration and directing money from AAG membership dues toward this fund. 2. Treasurer's report: We have $XX in our coffers. 3. Disability Specialty Group officers Resignations: Vera Chouinard, as DSG Chair; Rob Kitchin as a DSG Director Slate of nominations: Rob Wilton for Chair; Mike Dorn for Secretary-Treasurer; Nicole Yantzi for Director Maurizio Antoninetti needs to be contacted to find out if he plans to continue as one of the co-Directors representing students. Another student is needed to fill the co-Director slot. Deb Metzel will continue as a Director. 4. Vera Chouinard will request a list of the DSG membership from the AAG membership coordinator. 5. AAG 2005, Denver, CO. Suggestions for the next annual conference were discussed. These included organizing a field trip of significant ADAPT sites and a screening of the movie When Billy Broke His Head. (Beth Haller was identified as a person to contact about a panel considering disability history, activism and relations with the mainstream media.) The question of a plenary speaker was raised. As has been our short tradition, a disability-geography panel or presenter session would be organized (by Vera?) as well as efforts to integrate disability geography into other appropriate topical/regional sessions. Respectfully submitted, Deb Metzel |
