Interactive media for The Violet Fire Opera Project includes interactive design derived from my work with physical/voice input and dynamic media projection and an overall design for media projection with collaborator Jen Simmons. The libretto was written by Miriam Seidel, with score composed by Jon Gibson, and stage direction by Terry O'Reilly. Continuous media projection on multiple screens is integrated fully into the staging of the 80 minute opera.

Violet Fire is about Nikola Tesla, the great electrical inventor from the turn of the 20th century. The media for Violet Fire weaves various story lines about Tesla's world-altering innovation, supporting the libretto and introducing parallel concepts. The media is also designed to challenge the sensory expectations of viewers, as Tesla's stunning technological wonders disoriented a world moving from hand labor and horsepower to electrification of cities and global telecommunications. Tesla worked to harness the boundless dynamism of nature for the extension and liberation of humankind. The Violet Fire interactive media design seeks to engage this metaphor of human extension.

Violet Fire had its first workshop performance at Temple University in February 2004, with funding from Temple, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and private donors. We are currently planning the world premiere of the complete production of Violet Fire in Belgrade in July 2006, during the 150th anniversary celebration of Nikola Tesla's birth, with support from the Trust for Mutual Understanding.
